Der Amédée genannte Leuchtturm, der 1862 in den Pariser Werkstätten Rigolet nach Léonce Reynauds Bauplan errichtet wurde, erweist sich besonders repräsentativ für diese Geschichte. Abmontiert und nach Neukaledonien abgeschickt sollte er ein genereller Leuchtturmtyp werden, unabhängig von den besonderen Bedingungen der Küste, die zu beleuchten war. Die von Eiffel geübte Kritik des Projekts verwies auf eine typische Architektur der Leuchttürme aus Maschendraht und Röhren, die einen gewissen Erfolg in Südamerika und im indischen Ozean hatten. Der Aufsatz bietet abschließend eine systematische Überprüfung dieses verkannten Bauerbes an, das( welt)weit gestreut ist und sich oft im schlechten Zustand befindet. Often neglected in conventional surveys emphasizing pretty postcard views of coasts, a study of metal lighthouse structures reveals the industrial and urban dimension of this building type. Initially used for lanterns and the serial production of small port towers, iron and steel were applied in the course of the 19th century to the construction of full-scale lighthouse structures. The Amédée Lighthouse – built in 1862 in the Paris workshops of Rigolet according to plans developed by Léonce Reynaud – is exemplary of this type. Dismantled and shipped to New Caledonia, the Amédée Lighthouse was to be a “generic” structure, designed independently of the particular coast it would illuminate. Responding to this project with his own design, Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) developed a novel lighthouse architecture made of mesh and tubes, which met some success in South America and the Indian Ocean.
