This development is contemporary with a renewal of spirituality that is locally referred to through the expression íslenska nýöld (Icelandic New Age), and is most often conceived in terms of a rupture within the traditional religious field. Now, it is true that in the case of most of these healer‑mediums, the cosmogonies elaborated, the techniques borrowed and the supernatural figures summoned up bear witness to the profound changes brought about by the globalisation of spiritual goods and an interpretation of extremely heterogeneous symbolic matter. However, beyond the multiform characteristics that sometimes evoke a « despair of meaning », observation of the practices and identities to which the mediums lay claim also reveals the routinisation of a « religious order » that was instituted at a previous prophetic period.
