En 1536, le Malouin Jacques Cartier prend possession, au nom de la France, d’un archipel situé au sud de Terre–Neuve, à quelque 4000 kilomètres de la métropole. Les lieux étaient déjà fréquentés depuis le début du XVIe siècle par les pêcheurs basques, saintongeais, bretons et normands. L’archipel est tour à tour occupé par les Français et les Anglais et son histoire est restée longtemps chaotique. Le traité de Paris, en 1763, conserve l’archipel à la France au détriment des Anglais et le seco. In 1536 Malouin Jacques Cartier took possession, on behalf of France, of an archipelago south of Newfoundland, some 4000 kilometres from mainland France. Since the beginning of the 16th century, the places were already used by Basque, Saintongeese, Breton and Normands fishermen. The archipelago is in turn occupied by French and English and its history has been chaotic for a long time. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 retained the archipelago in France to the detriment of the English and the seco.
