De la négociation à l’imposition : le risque d’un retour en arrière, d’un retour au mépris

The evolution of relations between the Aboriginal peoples of Canada and other citizens since the 1970s prompts many to think that the situation can only improve. Despite numerous positive changes, Canada has nevertheless maintained a colonial relationship with the First Nations – a relationship that has involved, in the past, manifestations of contempt toward the first inhabitants of this country. Since this contempt has often taken the form of benevolent paternalism and has always been revealed only after the damage was done, it has been invisible historically to its perpetrators. In this text, a heuristic method enabling this invisible contempt to be unveiled is developed by coupling the moral phenomenology of Axel Honneth (The Struggle for Recognition, Disrespect) with a functional approach involving the phenomenon of benevolent contempt. After briefly describing the method, this article uses it to analyse some contemporaneous discourses. L’évolution des relations entre autochtones et allochtones depuis les années 1970 fait croire à plusieurs que ces relations ne peuvent aller qu’en s’améliorant. Néanmoins, l’État canadien ne s’est toujours pas sorti de la relation coloniale vis-à-vis des Premières Nations, relation qui impliqua historiquement de nombreuses manifestations de mépris à leur endroit, mépris qui fut souvent invisible aux yeux de ceux qui le portaient et se croyaient bien intentionnés. Dans une analyse fonctionnelle également influencée par la phénoménologie morale d’Axel Honneth, l’auteur expose dans ce texte une méthode heuristique permettant de repérer le mépris par ses fonctions, sa dynamique et ses conséquences, plutôt que par un contenu narratif qui change selon les époques afin de correspondre au cadre normatif ambiant. Il utilise finalement cette méthode afin d’examiner certains discours et agissements contemporains.
