Samuel de Champlain devant les historiens de la Nouvelle-France

This study considers the way historians Marc Lescarbot, Gabriel Sagard, Chrestien Leclercq, Le Roy Bacqueville de la Potherie and François-Xavier de Charlevoix treat five controversial episodes in the career of Samuel de Champlain. That is his decision to settle at the Sainte-Croix Island, the speech delivered by the Saintongeais during the reception at the pointe Saint-Mathieu, his decision to intervene with force against the Iroquois in 1609, his failed expedition in the “North Sea” (or the Hudson Bay) and his decision to surrender Quebec City to the hands of the Kirke brothers. The study shows that if those authors do not attack head on the Saintongeais, the first Governor of New France, their criticisms are still perceptible in a subtle way through their discourses. It follows that one sees that the image of Champlain that was conveyed by his contemporaries and chroniclers of the next generation was far from being as idealized as it will become after the Conquest. La présente enquête examine le traitement que les historiens Marc Lescarbot, Gabriel Sagard, Chrestien Leclercq, Le Roy Bacqueville de la Potherie et François-Xavier de Charlevoix réservent à cinq épisodes controversés de la carrière de Champlain, soit la décision de s’établir sur l’île Sainte-Croix, l’allocution du Saintongeais lors de la réception à la pointe Saint-Mathieu, sa décision d’intervenir par la force contre les Iroquois en 1609, son expédition ratée dans la « mer du Nord » (ou la baie d’Hudson) et sa décision d’abandonner Québec aux mains des frères Kirke. L’étude montre que si les auteurs n’attaquent pas de front le Saintongeais, premier gouverneur de la Nouvelle-France, leurs critiques n’en sont pas moins perceptibles en sourdine à travers les mailles de leurs discours. Par où l’on voit que l’image de Champlain projetée par ses contemporains et les chroniqueurs de la génération suivante était loin d’être aussi idéalisée qu’elle le deviendra après la Conquête.
