L’ouvrage de Matthias Egeler, Islands in the West, est consacré au motif des « Îles à l’Ouest » dans l’imaginaire du Nord et de l’Irlande médiévale : M. Egeler entend souligner la possible connexion entre les récits norrois et irlandais et le motif classique des « Îles Bénies », qu’on retrouve chez les auteurs grecs et romains. Il cherche ici à explorer le concept de géographie mythique : comment des lieux réels, comme l’océan Atlantique, ou, pour Odainsakr, une vallée au nord de l’Islande, s. Matthias Egeler, Islands in the West, focuses on the motive of the ‘West Islands’ in Northern and medieval Ireland: Mr Egeler wished to highlight the possible connection between the Nordic and Irish narratives and the classic motive of the ‘benign islands’, which was found in Greek and Roman authors. Here he seeks to explore the concept of mythic geography: how real places such as the Atlantic Ocean or, for Odainsakr, a valley north of Iceland.
