L’Île des Pingouins d’Anatole France : origines et horizons d’un antiroman historique

En 1908, Anatole France publie L’Île des Pingouins. Ce roman historique à épisodes met en scène l’histoire nationale des origines à l’époque contemporaine, sous la forme de la fictive « Pingouinie ». Il détourne l’histoire de façon humoristique et critique, pour battre en brèche deux modèles influents : l’histoire républicaine positiviste et l’histoire cléricale. Or, la poétique du roman évolue à mesure que se développe la civilisation des Pingouins dans la fiction, et les chapitres font se succéder plusieurs influences génériques et stylistiques qui se trouvent parodiées. On propose de rapprocher L’Île des Pingouins de la tradition de l’antiroman. La juxtaposition des emprunts intertextuels met en place le fonctionnement paradoxal et la force subversive de la somme parodique, qui recouvre l’actualité du texte et suggère un pessimisme historique justifié dans le contexte idéologique des années 1905-1908. In 1908, Anatole France published L’Île des Pingouins. This episodes historical novel depicts the national history of the origins of the contemporary era, in the form of the fictive ‘Pingouinia’. He manipulates history in a humoristic and critical way, and thwart two influential models: positivist Republican history and clerical history. However, the poetic of the novel changes as the civilisation of the Pingouins develops in the fiction, and the chapters follow several generic and stylistic influences that are parodified. It is proposed to bring the Isle of the Pingouins closer to the tradition of antiroman. The juxtaposition of intertextual loans puts in place the paradoxical operation and subversive force of the parodic sum, which covers the topical nature of the text and suggests a justified historical pessimism in the ideological context of the 1905-1908 years.
