Few geographical maps of the 18th century caused so much controversy as the map prepared by Joseph Nicolas Delisle in 1731 for the Second Kamchatka Expedition. Drawn up according to the knowledge of the time to assign tasks to the explorers, Delisle’s map proved to be inaccurate, and this caused the...

Drawn up according to the knowledge of the time to assign tasks to the explorers, Delisle’s map proved to be inaccurate, and this caused the death of numerous members of the expedition, including its chief Vitus Bering. Delisle was held responsible of this disaster. In this study, we will argue an alternative point of view, based on the analysis of the three maps of Northern Pacific – of 1731/33, 1745 and 1752 – associated with Delisle’s name. We will highlight the specificity of each of them and demonstrate their varying influence on the dissemination of knowledge in this field. More generally, we will examine the divergent issues that have determined the attitudes of different countries and groups of interest with regard to scientific knowledge, with an emphasis on the notion of “state secret”.
