In the North of the Iberian Peninsula, there are a lot of caves, which have been a type of hermit's settlement during the Early Middle Ages. But this survival of rock habitats must be connected with some form of human settlements. Analysis of documents about the Rioja region enables us to demonstrate their relationship with the great monasteries of the area and with the process of agrarian colonization in that period, highlighting their role in settlement until the 10th and 11th centuries. SUMMARY: In the north of the Iberian Peninsula, there are plenty of caves that have served as a sender in the Upper Middle Ages. But the survival of the middle-dwelling needs to be linked to some forms of human settlements. Analysis of La Rioja’s documentation makes it possible to verify the links between these caves and the large monasteries in the area and the process of agricultural colonisation at the time, highlighting their role in the population until the centuries of X-XI.ABSTRACT: In the North of the Iberian Peninsula, there are a lot of caves, which have been a type of herm’s settlement during the Early Middle Ages. But this surrogacy of rock habitats must be connected with some form of human settlements. Analysis of documents regarding the Rioja region enables us to demonstrate their relationship with the great monasteries of the area and with the process of agricultural colonification in that period, raising their role in settlement throughout the 10th and 11th centuries.
