S. natans is a freshwater oligosaprobic species, found both in mesoeutrophic and in oligomezotrophic water bodies with an oscillating water level. The change in the depth of growth of S. natans leads to the formation of four ecological forms: terrestrial, emergent, submerged with leaves floating on the surface, completely submerged deep­water sterile.
