From the politics of violence to the affirmation of minority? Case study of Saami in Norway

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie polityki edukacyjnej wobec mniejszości Saami, zamieszkującej od tysięcy lat północną część Skandynawii. Główny nacisk położony jest na relacje pomiędzy tożsamością, kulturą i edukacją. Podjęto również próbę nakreślenia historycznych i współczesnych podejść do problemu mniejszości w edukacji - w kontekście politycznym. Autor dostrzega, iż nie ma prostych odpowiedzi i rozwiązań wobec problemu tradycyjnych mniejszości we współczesnej rzeczywistości — w szczególności w aspekcie wyboru pomiędzy tradycyjnymi wartościami i tożsamością a sposobami funkcjonowania w nowoczesnym społeczeństwie. The article looks at education policy towards the Saami minority, which has lived in the northern part of Scandinavia for thousands of years. The main focus is on the relationship between identity, culture and education. An attempt was also made to outline historical and contemporary approaches to the problem of minorities in education – in a political context. The author recognises that there are no simple answers and solutions to the problem of traditional minorities in today’s realities – in particular as regards the choice between traditional values and identity and ways of working in modern society.
