Koori and Inuit Partitas by Krzysztof Knittel – Intermedial Soundscape

Intermediality, as a phenomenon of postmodern culture, constitutes one of the significant paradigms of modern comparative studies. Werner Wolf's theory of intermediality assumes presence of various relations which one medium enters into with other media, resulting in the case of multimediality – the so called “media hybrids”. Partita I (Koori) for alto and soprano saxophones, symphony orchestra and electronic media as well as Partita II (Inuit) for flute, string orchestra and electronic media by the Polish composer Krzysztof Knittel, which will be the subject of the paper, are examples of intermedial works on the one hand, and, on the other, they constitute instances of ecological music that creates the so-called soundscape. Apart from the sounds emitted by traditional instruments and electronic devices, the music material also comprises sounds separated from their sources: the original sounds of ethnic groups and sounds typical of the territories which they inhabit. In both Partitas, the sounds that originate from nature become symbols which convey semantic values. The compositions presented in the paper create a kind of acousmatic sound spec- tacle which reveals the symbolic meaning of sound emission. The analysis of both works will be conducted with reference to Murray R. Schafer and Werner Wolf's theoretical assumptions. Intermedialność, jako fenomen kultury ponowoczesnej, stanowi jeden z ważniejszych para- dygmatów współczesnych badań komparatystycznych. Teoria intermedialności autorstwa Wernera Wolfa zakłada obecność różnych relacji, w jakie dane medium wchodzi z innymi mediami, dając przypadek multimedialności, tzw. „hybrydy medialne”. Partita I (Koori) na saksofony altowy i sopranowy, orkiestrę symfoniczną i media elektroniczne oraz Partita II (Inuit) na flet, orkiestrę smyczkową i media elektroniczne polskiego kompozytora Krzysztofa Knittla, które są przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu, z jednej strony stanowią przykład dzieł intermedialnych, z drugiej zaś przykład muzyki ekologicznej, tworzącej tzw. ...
