Description
Summary:In this paper new ways of economic use of the Arctic are discussed, that may be or have already been used in the region, and which are made possible by modern technology, as well as climate change. These methods primarily include the navigation of ships, which already takes place to a limited extent (including LNG transport), the use of marine genetic resources (at present 31 patents have been issued in this area) and new applications such as the carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) and wind farms. These issues raise many questions, especially in light of the risks for the environment and the role that indigenous people have in this process, which was also raised in this article. Other important issues, also mentioned in this article, are the regulations applicable to the new uses of the Arctic and indication of what rules are missing for the effective and safe development. The conclusions indicate that the use of the Arctic with the means of new technologies can have a positive impact on local communities; however they should have an influence on how this development will take place. Nor can be the international community cut off from the decision and law making process, because it is slowly starting to be a new player in the Arctic.
