Kiviuq : An Epic in the Making?

In a stimulating paper, Roberte Hamayon explored the connection between shamanic and epic traditions among the Siberian Buryat. In this paper I examine the shamanic end epic dimensions of Inuit stories, notably the famous unikaaqtuaq of Kiviuq. The stories of Kiviuq have all the features of an emergent epic, focusing on a shamanic hero. Particular attention is given to the complex dialectics of the social and non-social behaviour of the hero. Kiviuq’s position appears to be ambiguous as his adventurous may result in a complete alienation of society as well as in a return to his wives. He does not use his shamanic skills for the benefit of the community but to survive in his encounters with dangerous non-human beings. Thus Kiviuq is not a hero of service, but a hero of survival. Dans un article stimulant, Roberte Hamayon explorait les liens entre tradition chamanique et tradition épique chez les Bouriates de Sibérie. Dans le présent article, j’examine les dimensions chamanique et épique des récits inuit, et en particulier de l’illustre unikaaqtuaq de Kiviuq. Les récits qui mettent en scène Kiviuq présentent tous les traits d’une épopée émergente centrée sur un héros chamanique. L’article porte une attention particulière à la dialectique complexe qui existe entre le comportement social et non social du héros. La position de Kiviuq paraît ambiguë, puisque ses aventures peuvent se dénouer aussi bien sur son aliénation complète de la société que sur son retour à ses femmes. Il ne met pas ses aptitudes chamaniques au service de la communauté mais à celui de sa survie lorsqu’il rencontre de dangereux êtres non humains. Ainsi Kiviuq n’est-il pas un héros de service mais un héros de la survie.
