Fascination, admiration, respect, mais aussi peur et colère sont les sentiments que les éleveurs mongols éprouvent lorsque l’on parle du loup gris (canis lupus chanco). Considéré comme le chien du ciel divin, tengerijn nohoj, mais aussi comme l’ancêtre mythique du grand Gengis khan (Even et Pop 1994), il est prisé pour son endurance, son intelligence et sa débrouillardise. En revanche, son appétit vorace pour la viande des moutons, des chèvres, des vaches et même des chevaux lui attire la haine parfois viscérale des éleveurs, qui le chassent autant pour protéger leur bétail que pour le prestige de la proie. Seen as the dog of the divin sky tengerijn nohoj, but also as the mythic ancest of the great Gengis khan (Even and Pop 1994), he is praised for his endurance, intelligence and desperate. On the other hand, its appetite for the meat of sheep, goats, cows and even horses attracts him the sometimes visceral hatred of farmers, who chests it as much for the protection of their livestock as for the prestige of prey.
