Peer reviewed Este artículo es la síntesis de un trabajo de investigación iniciado en los años 90 sobre el naufragio del San Telmo, navío de guerra de 74 cañones español que desapareció en 1819 al Sur del Cabo de Hornos en su viaje de Cádiz a Lima. Su objetivo es la realización de un examen crítico de las fuentes británicas que se refieren a los viajes del bergantín Williams y de los testimonios del capitán William Smith para esclarecer las circunstancias aún oscuras de uno de los grandes naufragios de la Marina Española. Se trata también, en un segundo plano, de arrojar luz sobre unos acontecimientos históricos de gran transcendencia ya que están ligados al descubrimiento de la Antártida. This article is a summary of a research work initiated in the 90s into the sinking of San Telmo, a 74 Spanish barrel warship which disappeared in 1819 to the south of Cape Hornos on his journey from Cádiz to Lima. Its aim is to carry out a critical review of the British sources referring to the journeys of the bergantín Williams and the testimonies of Captain William Smith to clarify the still dark circumstances of one of the major shipwrecks of the Spanish Navy. In the background, it is also a question of shedding light on major historical events as they are linked to the discovery of Antarctica.
