Les voies du corral

Among the reindeer herders of northern Kamchatka (far east Siberia, Russian Federation), pastoral practices and ritual performances reveal a similar connection to orientation. In the village of Ačajvajam, this relationship expresses itself explicitly in the spring, when Chukchee, Even and Koriak herders together build a corral in order to separate the female reindeer from the rest of the herd before calving time, and then celebrate the birth of the fawns in the residential outskirts of their village. Never consistently fixed, the pragmatic and symbolic marks of orientation determine a moving topography in which the positions of humans, animals and “spirits” sometimes overlap with one another or even take the place of each other. In this perpetual movement, body gesture (dancing) and vocal gesture (guttural sounds, melodic singings) appear as powerful markers of orientation. Chez les éleveurs de rennes du Nord-Kamtchatka (Extrême-Orient sibérien, Fédération de Russie), les pratiques pastorales et les performances rituelles laissent entrevoir un même rapport à l’orientation. Dans la petite communauté villageoise d’Ačajvajam, celui-ci s’exprime de manière particulièrement explicite au printemps, lorsque les éleveurs tchouktches, évènes et koriaks érigent ensemble un corral en toundra pour diviser les troupeaux avant la mise bas, puis célèbrent la naissance des faons dans les périphéries résidentielles de leur village. Jamais totalement fixes, les repères pragmatiques et symboliques de l’orientation déterminent une topographie mouvante dans laquelle les positions des hommes, des animaux et des « esprits » peuvent parfois se chevaucher, voire se substituer les unes aux autres. Dans ce mouvement perpétuel, le geste corporel (danse) et vocal (sons de gorge, chant mélodique) apparaissent comme des puissants marqueurs de l’orientation.
