Né en 1928 en Norvège, Fredrik Barth s’est d’abord orienté vers une formation en biologie, avant de se vouer à l’anthropologie (étudiée à Chicago et Cambridge). Il a été professeur d’anthropologie sociale à Bergen de 1961 à 1972, puis à Oslo de 1972 à 1985. Attaché au travail de terrain, il s’est consacré à de multiples zones d’observation : Kurdistan irakien, Iran, Pakistan, Soudan, Papouasie-Nouvelle Guinée, Oman, Bali, Bhoutan, sans oublier ses recherches sur la Norvège septentrionale. Eth. Né in 1928 to Norway, Fredrik Barth first turned to training in biology and then focused on anthropology (studied in Chicago and Cambridge). He was a professor of social anthropology in Bergen from 1961 to 1972 and then in Oslo from 1972 to 1985. Attached to the fieldwork, he focused on multiple observation areas: Iraqi Kurdistan, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Papua New Guinea, Oman, Bali, Bhutan, as well as his research on Northern Norway. ETH.
