Studying the material basis of power allows us to take a closer look at both the machinery of Empire and the contributions of different sociocultural groups to the colonization of America. Rice proves to be an unplanned solution to the food insecurity provoked by the massive irruption of migrants and enslaved people in the colony. For the First Nations, the establishment of rice plantations on the banks of the Mississippi River delta means territorial and cultural appropriation. Cet article s’intéresse aux conditions spécifiques de la création de la riziculture et de l’économie du riz en Louisiane française, entre 1717 et 1724, en analysant une description d’une habitation, celle de Claude Joseph Dubreuil, dans la région des Chapitoulas. L’étude des assises matérielles du pouvoir nous permet d’observer les rouages de l’Empire en tenant compte de la contribution des groupes socioculturels à la colonisation. Le riz s’avère une solution imprévue à l’insécurité alimentaire de la colonie provoquée par l’irruption massive de migrants et de personnes d’origine africaine réduites à l’esclavage. Pour les Premières Nations, l’établissement des plantations de riz sur les rives du delta mississippien implique une appropriation territoriale et culturelle.
