The part of the Saguenay River included in the park is not currently of importance for waterfowl at any time of the year. On the other hand, the Upper and Lower Estuary sections of the St. Lawrence within the park are of interest to waterfowl, as hundreds or even thousands of individuals use these areas for varying periods, depending on the time of year. Some of the species are simply migrating through, while others, such as nesting common eiders (Somateria mollissima), moulting scoters (Melanitta spp.), or wintering goldeneyes (Bucephala spp.), stay for several months. The high use of the estuarine portion of the SSLMP by waterfowl is likely due to the foraging habitats and undisturbed resting areas that it provides.
