The peculiarity of the Japanese Lake Suwa lies in the association of these compression structures in ice cover with a rite of the Shinto religion: omiwatari (the crossing of the god). Thanks to the writing down of this phenomenon by priests since the 14th century, chronicles for Suwa Lake are unique in the world in terms of their precision (day and time of icing, appearance of the first crackles) and their spread over more than five centuries. These archives had been used by researchers as early as the 1950s to try to obtain a reconstruction of paleoclimate. But, until now, all scientists had used the raw data. In this paper, the authors provide corrected data for the first time. Indeed, by comparing the religious registers of the 20th century and scientific observations, the authors discovered that priests and hydroclimatologists did not have the same definition of complete lake ice cover. This time lag between data should therefore be taken into account. ...
