The end of the middle palaeolithic in northern France

International audience The end of the Middle Palaeolithic remains a poorly known period in Northern France. This region is further characterized by the absence of a «transitional» industry identified elsewhere in Europe. The discovery of occupation levels contemporary of marine isotope stage 3 remains rare, and their chronology is difficult to specify. A similar situation is also described for England and Belgium. The situation is different in Germany, where many levels of occupation are attested, but the Middle Palaeolithic seems to end there a little earlier. Examination of stratigraphic, environmental and archaeological data indicates that preservation conditions are far from optimal for Palaeolithic levels and that Neandertal paleodemography was weak, which explains the low number of sites. The end of the Middle Palaeolithic in northern France appears to be around 40 ka, during Greenland Interstadial 9, or just after, during Heinrich event 4. La fin du Paléolithique moyen est une période peu connue dans le nord de la France. Cette région est de plus caractérisée par l’absence d’industrie dite « de transition », identifiée un peu partout ailleurs en Europe. La découverte de niveaux d’occupation contemporains du stade isotopique marin 3 reste rare, et leur chronologie est difficile à préciser. Une situation analogue est décrite pour l’Angleterre et la Belgique. La situation est différente en Allemagne, où de nombreux niveaux d’occupation sont attestés, mais le Paléolithique moyen semble s’y terminer un peu plus tôt. L’examen des données stratigraphiques, environnementales et archéologiques indique que les conditions de préservation sont loin d’être optimales pour les niveaux paléolithiques et que la paléodémographie néandertalienne était faible, ce qui explique le petit nombre de gisements. La fin du Paléolithique moyen dans le nord de la France semble prendre place aux alentours de 40 ka, pendant le Greenland Interstadial 9, ou juste après, pendant l’évènement de Heinrich 4.
