Au début de son ouvrage Empires of the Monsoon (1996), Richard Hall recommande à son lecteur, pour apercevoir la zone océan Indien, de commencer par retourner la carte : à l’envers, le lecteur pourra distinguer un “bol” formé par les côtes de l’Afrique, du Moyen-Orient, de l’Asie et de l’Australie, coiffé par l’Antarctique.
