En 1987, Michel L’Hour avait conduit des expertises sur l’atoll des Bassas da India (L’Hour et al. 1987), et dès la fin des années 1980, le Drassm a entrepris de dresser à partir des archives un premier inventaire des sites archéologiques sous-marins potentiels de l’aire mahoraise et des îles Éparses du canal de Mozambique. Les missions du ministère chargé de la Culture en mer, et donc du Drassm, soulignent sa responsabilité dans les eaux bordant Mayotte, et les Terres australes et antarctiqu. In 1987, Michel L’Hour carried out expert reports on the atoll of the Bassas da India (L’Hour et al. 1987), and since the late 1980s, Drassm undertook to draw up an initial inventory of the potential underwater archaeological sites in the Mauritanian area and the islands of the Mozambique Canal from the archives. The tasks of the Ministry responsible for culture at sea, and thus of the Drassm, underline its responsibility in the waters around Mayotte, and the Southern and Antarctic Territories.
