He defends the idea that the “imagined North” is a system of signs, contructed more by discourse than by experience: hence the observed discrepancies between cultures of the North and cultural representations of the North. He notes the insistence of the expressions “beyond“, “going up north“, etc. which have the effect of reinforcing the difference of the North. Finally, he analyses what the Inuit mean by the terms "South" and "North", showing how these were imposed by colonialism, in contradiction to the Inuit conception of space. The article presents some initiatives for achieving decolonializing reversal on the part of the Inuit, such as the re-appropriation of their toponymy or the invention of new terms to replace "the North" and "the Arctic".
