Nuuk : un modèle groenlandais de métropole arctique ?

In 2008, Greenland achieved to get a strengthened autonomy. A constitutional process and some prospects to hold a referendum do bring closer a possible future independance. Nuuk, the county town, searching for both centrality and geographic legitimacy, has then to give credibility to a potential capital city status. Since a decade, elected representatives, researchers and town planners attempt to consider a myriad of matters. How shall they adapt to meet new postcolonial circumstances and conciliate with arctic fantasy and Inuits’ vernacular traditions ? Will it be possible to reconcile a multicultural city with the spirit of former coastal communities ? Research on urban marketing documents and constantly evolving urban projects as well as interviews made in 2018 suggest answers to these questions and allow the identification of singular urbanistic patterns. Le Groenland a atteint une autonomie renforcée en 2008. Un processus constitutionnel et des perspectives de référendum rapprochent un peu plus la possibilité d’une future indépendance. Nuuk, chef-lieu de région en quête de centralité et de légitimité géographique, doit alors crédibiliser un potentiel statut de capitale. Une myriade de questionnements saisissent élus, chercheurs et urbanistes depuis une dizaine d’années. Comment concilier virage postcolonial, fantasmes arctiques et traditions inuites vernaculaires ? Est-il possible de réconcilier une ville multiculturelle avec l’esprit des anciennes communautés côtières ? Une étude des documents de marketing urbain et des projets urbains en devenir, ainsi que des entretiens semi-directifs réalisés en 2018 apportent des éléments de réponse, permettant l’identification de patterns urbanistiques singuliers.
