Hélène Gaudy schildert in Un monde sans rivage (2019) die Andrée-Polarexpedition aus dem Jahre 1897, die im Versuch, den Nordpol im Gasballon zu erreichen, scheiterte. Dieser Artikel erforscht zunächst die Gründe, die die Autorin dazu geführt haben, sich mit einer wohl bekannten Expedition auseinanderzusetzen, die sich jedoch als eine unerschöpfliche Material-Quelle erwiesen hat. Anschließend analysieren wir die Art und Weise, wie das Werk mit den sowohl quantitativ als auch qualitativ unzureichenden Spuren der Expedition umgeht, um daraus einen sich als rein hypothetisch darstellenden Bericht zu entwickeln, der die Quellen hinterfragt. Zuletzt zeigen wir, wie Hélène Gaudy, bei Verknüpfung einer archäologischen mit einer ökokritischen Methode, Vorstellungen, Nutzungen und aufeinanderfolgende Zustandsstadien der Arktis ergründet. In Un monde sans rivage (2019), Hélène Gaudy recounts Andrée’s Arctic balloon expedition of 1897, a failed attempt to reach the North Pole. This article focuses first on the reasons that prompted the novelist to investigate a well-known expedition of the past, which proved to be an inexhaustible source of information. It then studies how the novel deals with the quantitative and qualitative insufficiency of the expedition’s traces by proposing a narrative that questions its sources, and presents itself as hypothetical. Finally, the article shows how Hélène Gaudy combines an archaeological approach with ecological considerations in order to explore representations, uses, and successive states of the Arctic.
