The custom of dating the beginning of the Iron Age to around 800 BC is contested here, not only in relation to wider social developments but also in relation to metallurgical techniques. A detailed analysis of the fundamental issues concerning « Hallstatt » swords is proposed, in terms of typology, numbers, chronology and spatial information. An attempt is then made to show that the well-known « Hallstatt » iron sword does not emerge from an unilateral origin, whether north Alpine or north Atlantic, but is rather the outcome of a series of much earlier bilateral or even multilateral transfers. Lastly, it is stressed that use of iron only contributes to major economic change at a much later date, during the 3rd century BC. L’habitude de fixer le début de l’âge du Fer vers 800 av. J.-C. est ici contestée, tant du point de vue sociologique global que du strict point de vue de la technique métallurgique. Un examen détaillé des questions fondamentales tournant autour des épées « hallstattiennes » est d’abord proposé aux plans typologiques, quantitatifs, chronologiques et spatiaux. Nous tentons, ensuite, de montrer que la fameuse épée « hallstattienne » en fer ne résulte pas d’une genèse unilatérale, issue soit du domaine nord-alpin, soit du domaine nord-atlantique, mais d’une bien plus précoce série de transferts bilatéraux, voire multilatéraux. Nous soulignons, enfin, que l’usage du fer ne participe d’une mutation économique déterminante que bien plus tard, vers le IIIe s. av. J.-C.
