Dank eines Ausläufers des Golfstroms hat die Stadt Murmansk ganzjährig einen eisfreien Hafen, der die größte Stadt der Arktis auch militärisch interessant macht. Im letzten Jahrhundert spielte die Stadt in beiden Weltkriegen sowie im Russischen Bürgerkrieg als strategischer Ort eine wichtige Rolle. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde Murmansk nach Volgograd am stärksten zerstört, konnte trotzdem aber von den Deutschen nicht eingenommen werden.
