The badge was designed after a contest among Inuit child patients at the Charles Camsell Hospital in Edmonton. At the bottom is the motto "piyautailili" which is Inuktitut for "Defend Even Unto Death. The presence of the Inuit image and motto was in recognition to the squadron's former nickname, "Defenders of the North".
