Possession Island (Crozet atchipelago, french antarctic and austral territories : ethnology of "missions" on a desert island authorizing, thanks to circumstances, the in-depth study of the scapegoat process

From 1964 on, around 30 people belonging to what is called a « mission » spend a year on Possession Island, an uninhabitated French island located in the southern Indian Ocean. Sending militaries, contract workers and scientists all put together enables France both to ensure its sovereignty and to lead scientific research on a place which is notable for its location and wildlife. Social life takes place there like if under laboratory conditions : no one can flee group dynamics which go up to its achievment, or completeness. Thus social life cogs can be seen i.e. : the link between the necessity of finding and defending its own place whithin the group, following rivalries, accusations first dividing then unifying on a « faulty person » in a « salutary » movement. Many missions do not follow this natural scenario. They imitate the scenario which can not be played in such conditions. They make a scapegoat for a joke appear in the local folklore. Whereas psychologists, by choosing people sent on this island, select out persons they think will be guilty and prove therefore to which extent the lack of knowledge enables this spontaneous scenario. Depuis 1964, chaque année, une nouvelle « mission » composée d’une trentaine de personnes tout au plus, militaires, contractuels et scientifiques, est dépêchée pour un an sur l’île inhabitée de la Possession, située dans les Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises, au sud de l’Océan Indien, afin de garantir la souveraineté française sur ce lieu, remarquable par son isolement et sa faune, tout en y conduisant des activités de recherche. Cette situation de « huis clos » équivaut à une situation de laboratoire : l’impossibilité de se défaire de la dynamique de groupe en libère nécessairement le scénario exhaustif et donne ainsi nettement à voir les ressorts ordinaires de la vie sociale : le lien entre la nécessité de trouver et défendre sa place dans le groupe, les rivalités qui s’ensuivent, les accusations qui divisent et la convergence salvatrice des accusateurs sur un « ...
