Les études sur l’ethnogenèse au Canada : Enjeux et horizons de recherche pour le Québec

The history of the North American continent is characterized, genealogically and culturally by the intermixture of its colonial, Amerindian and Inuit populations. This intermixture led to great transformations of all of these populations, and also, in some cases, to the emergence of new communities (that is to say, communities of mixed European and Aboriginal ancestry that considered themselves to be distinct from their European and Indian or Inuit forebears). Studies on ethnogenesis that took root in Canada about 25 years ago seek to understand the processes by which these communities came into being. They try to explain how there arose specific groups of individuals of mixed ancestries with a culture and identity that set them apart from their parents. This article explains how the theoretical and methodological fundamentals of these studies have evolved, from their very beginnings until the present time, particularly with regards to the challenges they face in Québec in their implementation and development. L’histoire du continent nord-américain a été marquée par le métissage à la fois généalogique et culturel des populations coloniales, amérindiennes et inuites qui s’y sont rencontrées. Ces métissages ont mené à des transformations profondes de toutes ces populations et aussi, dans certains cas, à l’émergence de nouvelles collectivités métisses (c’est-à-dire des collectivités qui se considéraient comme distinctes à la fois des colons, d’une part, et des Amérindiens ou des Inuits d’autre part). Les études sur l’ethnogenèse, qui se sont développées dans le contexte canadien il y a environ vingt-cinq ans, ont précisément pour objectif d’expliquer le processus de formation de ces nouvelles collectivités. Elles tentent d’exposer comment naissent la culture et le sentiment d’altérité identitaire qui a amené certains groupes issus du métissage à se considérer comme différents de leurs populations parentes.
