ABSTRACTAboriginal Coalescence, Territory and (Post)colonialism Reflections on Cases in Canada and AustraliaAlthough they have been irremediably transformed and are now part of the global System, the social orders, cultural consciousness and identities of Aboriginal peoples show a distinct durability. They are, however, reproduced in complex dialogue with the State and the dominant society. In today's (post)colonial contexts, discourses of multiculturalism abound and Aboriginal peoples, like other groups, claim the right to be different. During the course of negotiating for political and territorial rights, they corne up against political and juridical ideologies that are still fairly uniform and homogenous and often cannot deal with recognizing a radical Othemess. The theme of Aboriginal relationships with the land is used here in order to explore local strategies and resistance, as well as some of the obstacles and ambiguities brought up by the process of claiming rights. The two groups studied are the Atikamekw (Haut St-Maurice, Québec, Canada) and the Kukatja (Western Désert, Australia).
