A Technical Transition : Harp Seal Fisheries on the Labrador Coast since the Beginnings of the XVIIIth CenturySeal fishing (Phoca groenlandica) has played a determinant role in the economic history of the Labrador Coast. Since the beginnings of the XVIIIth century, this activity required the use of various steady fishing tools or of fisheries adapted to the characteristics of the animal's movements along the coast and to the topographic conditions of the capture sites. A cognitive-structural analysis of the shape of these fishing tools shows two technical formulas that have been used successively : the enclosure and the labyrinth. The technical transition toward the latter happened during the XlXth century thanks to the transformation of the kind of enterprise from fishing " companies " to family exploitation. Depuis le début du XVIIIe siècle, cette activité a nécessité l'utilisation d'une grande variété de formes d'engins de pêche fixes ou adaptés aux particularités du mouvement de l'animal le long de la côte et aux conditions topographiques des sites de capture.Une analyse cognitive-structurale des formes de ces engins de pêche conduit à repérer deux formules techniques réalisées successivement : le parc et le labyrinthe. La transition technique vers ce dernier s'est effectuée au cours du XIXe siècle à la faveur du passage d'une exploitation par des " compagnies " de pêche à une exploitation de type familial.
