L’auteur se propose d’analyser la théorie de l’ethnicité de Fredrik Barth (1969) en la recontextualisant dans l’idéologie nationale norvégienne, laquelle est issue, comme celle de la Finlande, de la conjugaison d’une identification performative avec une catégorie politico-culturelle opposée à une autre, et des théories racialistes nordiques du xixe siècle (lesquelles donnent lieu à la représentation d’un ensemble national constitué par la coexistence sans fusion d’une « majorité ethnique » et de « minorités ethniques »), et s’interrogera sur l’ambiguïté d’une importation en France d’une telle théorie qui méconnaît toute catégorisation en référence à un ensemble hiérarchisé (être breton et français), pour ne reconnaître que des oppositions conflictuelles immuables (être lapon ou norvégien, gitan ou norvégien, breton ou français, beur ou français).
