This development is contemporary with a renewal of spirituality that is locally referred to through the expression íslenska nýöld (Icelandic New Age), and is most often conceived in terms of a rupture within the traditional religious field. Now, it is true that in the case of most of these healer‑mediums, the cosmogonies elaborated, the techniques borrowed and the supernatural figures summoned up bear witness to the profound changes brought about by the globalisation of spiritual goods and an interpretation of extremely heterogeneous symbolic matter. However, beyond the multiform characteristics that sometimes evoke a « despair of meaning », observation of the practices and identities to which the mediums lay claim also reveals the routinisation of a « religious order » that was instituted at a previous prophetic period. Depuis les années 1980, la société islandaise a connu une recrudescence du nombre de ses intercesseurs coutumiers entre le monde des vivants et celui de l’altérité spirituelle. Cette émergence, contemporaine d’un regain de spiritualité qui est localement identifié par l’expression íslenska nýöld (nouvel âge islandais), est le plus souvent pensée dans les termes d’une rupture au sein d’un champ religieux traditionnel. Or il est vrai que chez la plupart de ces médiums-guérisseurs, les cosmogonies élaborées, les techniques empruntées et les figures surnaturelles convoquées témoignent de profonds changements occasionés par une globalisation des biens spirituels et une interpénétration des matières symboliques les plus hétérogènes. Pour autant, au‑delà de ces caractéristiques multiformes qui évoquent parfois un « désespoir de sens », l’observation des pratiques et des identités revendiquées par les médiums révèle aussi la routinisation d’un « ordre religieux » qui fut institué à une époque prophétique antérieure.
