The main mechanical properties of its oceanic basement, the distribution of mantle upwellings and Bouguer anomalies beneath the ridge axis explain the dramatic regional variations of spreading and geomorphogenic processes. The greatest topographic contrasts in the best known ultra-slow-spreading boundary of the global ocean are presented and discussed with reference to divergent, transform and propagation geomorphic types. La dorsale sud-ouest indienne (SWI), entre les jonctions triples de Bouvetøya (océan Atlantique austral) et de Rodrigues (centre de l'océan Indien), est, après la dorsale arctique (Gakkel), la frontière la plus lente du monde et présente à ce titre la topographie la plus accidentée de toutes les dorsales du globe. Les principales propriétés du soubassement océanique et la répartition axiale des panaches mantelliques et des anomalies de Bouguer dans le manteau expliquent les spectaculaires variations régionales des processus d'expansion et de géomorphogenèse. Les contrastes topographiques majeurs de la mieux connue des frontières infralentes sont présentés et classés en trois types géomorphologiques : en divergence, en transformation et en propagation.
