The expeditionary force was under the command of Captain de Ternay, while the troops were under the command of Colonel count d'Haussonville. The naval division left Brest on May the 8th 1762 St. John's fell, without firing a shot, on June the 27th, into the hands of the French. The strong reaction of the English had not been expected. Governor General sir Jeffery Amherst immediatly mustered all available forces in New England and dispatched them to Newfoundland. For fear of being blockaded in St. John's harbour, M. de Ternay's small squadron escaped on September the 15th so that M. d'Haussonville, could only give up the last fort to the English on the 18th. The fact remains this daring campaign possibly caused the French to stay in North America, at least in the Saint-Pierre & Miquelon islands. Entre la chute de Montréal (8 septembre 1760) et le traité de Paris (10 février 1763), le Cour de France se mit dans l'esprit de reprendre possession de Terre-Neuve, « en vue d'opérations futures contre le Canada ». Le commandement de l'expédition fut confiée au capitaine de vaisseau chevalier de Ternay et le commandement des troupes au colonel comte d'Hausson ville. La division navale quitta Brest le 8 mai 1762 et Saint-Jean-de-Terre-Neuve tombait sans coup férir le 27 juin aux mains des Français. On avait compté sans la réaction foudroyante des Anglais. Le gouverneur général sir Jeffery Amherst réunit incontinent toutes les forces disponibles en Nouvelle-Angleterre et les jeta sur Terre-Neuve. Craignant d'être bloquée dans le port de Saint-Jean, la petite escadre de M. de Ternay s'échappa le 15 septembre, et M. d'Hausson ville ne put que rendre le dernier fort aux Anglais le 18. Il n'en reste pas moins que cette extraordinaire équipée valut peut-être à la France de conserver au moins en Amérique du Nord les ...
