Description
Summary:Abstract This paper presents a new method to describe, analyse and estimate production system performances. We introduce a new spline based surrogate model as a simplification of a simulation model over a stochastic Kanban controlled production line. Companies need to know about the relation between system parameters and system performances, especially work-in-process (WIP), lead time and throughput, in the existing system and in systems not yet implemented. Complex systems require simulation for analysis, but a particular simulation often presents limited information; this means that it is often necessary to simulate several alternatives to ensure that the best one is chosen. If the alternatives are many, this demands a lot of simulation time and resources. We suggest a surrogate model where the results of simulation results for different system performances are presented as points in a three dimensional environment. Parametric curves and surfaces of Bezier type are generated and adapted to these performance points. System performances of other alternatives than those simulated can be estimated from these parametric curves and surfaces. The number of simulation calculations can thereby be moderate but the analysis can still cover performance relations not explicitly simulated. The method is illustrated with a small production line system. anders.segerstedt@ltu.se (Segerstedt, Anders) janarpe@hin.no (Pettersen, Jan-Arne) bb@hin.no (Bang, Borre) Lulea University of Technology, Department of Industrial Logistics - SE-971 87 Lulea--> - SE-97187 - Lule - SWEDEN (Segerstedt, Anders) SWEDEN (Segerstedt, Anders) Narvik University College - Narvik - NORWAY (Pettersen, Jan-Arne) Narvik University Collage - Narvik - NORWAY (Bang, Borre) NORWAY SWEDEN
