Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic inventory of the most abundant demersal fish captured by benthic gears in southwestern Iceland (North Atlantic)

Abstract Stable isotopes (?13C and ?15N) were used to examine the origin of organic matter for the most representative demersal species of the SW Icelandic fishery, accounting for over 70% of landings of those species in the North Atlantic. Samples were collected during a 2-week period in early Sept...

Samples were collected during a 2-week period in early September 2004 from landings and directly during fishing cruises. Stable isotopes showed that particulate organic matter and sedimentary organic matter were at the base of the food web and appeared to fill two different compartments: the pelagic and the benthic. The pelagic realm was composed of only capelin and sandeel; krill and redfish occupied an intermediate position between pelagic and benthic realms; while anglerfish, haddock, cod and ling resulted as the true demersal species while tusk, rays and plaice were strongly linked to the benthic habitat. gsara@unipa.it (Sara, Gianluca) Dipartimento di Ecologia, Universita di Palermo - Via Scienze, Ed. 16 - 90128 - Palermo - ITALY (Sara, Gianluca) Dipartimento di Biologia Animale e Genetica, Universita degli Studi di Firenze - Via Romana 17 - 50100 - Florence - ITALY (Pirro, Maurizio) IAMC-CNR - Calata Porta di Massa, Porto di Napoli - 80133 - Naples - ITALY (Sprovieri, Mario) IAMC-CNR - Calata Porta di Massa, Porto di Napoli - 80133 - Naples - ITALY (Rumolo, Paola) Su?urnes University Research Centre, University of Iceland - Gar?vegur 1 - 245 - Sandger?i - ICELAND (Halldorsson, Halldor Palmar) Institute of Biology, University of Iceland - Askja, Natural Science Building, Sturlugata 7 - 101 - Reykjavik - ICELAND (Halldorsson, Halldor Palmar) Su?urnes University Research Centre, University of Iceland - Gar?vegur 1 - 245 - Sandger?i - ICELAND (Svavarsson, Jorundur) Institute of Biology, University of Iceland - Askja, Natural Science Building, Sturlugata 7 - 101 - Reykjavik - ICELAND (Svavarsson, Jorundur) ICELAND ITALY Registration: 2009-04-16 Received: 2008-04-22 Revised: 2009-04-13 Accepted: 2009-04-16 ePublished: 2009-04-30 Other/Unknown Material Iceland North Atlantic The University of Dublin, Trinity College: TARA (Trinity's Access to Research Archive) Askja ENVELOPE(-16.802,-16.802,65.042,65.042) Gar’ ENVELOPE(162.014,162.014,57.140,57.140) Palermo ENVELOPE(-63.600,-63.600,-65.067,-65.067) Urnes ENVELOPE(19.054,19.054,70.042,70.042) Helgoland Marine Research 63 4 309 315
