Korouomasta Geopark? Kartoitus Geopark-toimintamallin mahdollisuuksista

Opinnäytetyöni tavoitteena oli kartoittaa Korouoman ja sen lähialueiden toimintaympäristöä Geopark-verkoston toimintamallin näkökulmasta sekä tutkia Geopark-verkoston ja yksittäisten geoparkien toimintaa. Toimeksiantajana työssä oli Posion matkailuyhdistys ry. Työn teoriaosuus koostuu toimintaympäristön kuvauksesta, geoparkien toiminnalle tärkeän geomatkailun käsitteen selvittämisestä, katsauksesta Geopark-verkoston syntyyn ja toimintamalliin sekä geopark-konseptin määrittelemisestä ja kuvaamisesta. Toteutin työn empiirisen osuuden tekemällä kolme teemahaastattelua, joista yksi oli ryhmähaastattelu. Toisena tutkimusmenetelmänä käytin virtuaalista benchmarkingia, jonka avulla tutustuin geoparkien internet-sivuihin. Suomen ensimmäisen ja ainoan geoparkin, Rokuan, sivuston kävin läpi järjestelmällisesti. Käytin aineiston analysoinnissa teoriaohjaavaa menetelmää. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että Korouoman ja sen lähialueiden toimintaympäristöllä on edellytyksiä lähteä hakemaan Geopark-verkoston jäsenyyttä. Alueella on suuri hyödyntämätön potentiaali, joka vaatii yhtenäisen hallinnon. Prosessin käynnistäminen edellyttää hallintorakenteen muodostamista, rahoituksen järjestämistä sekä yhteisen selkeän tahtotilan saavuttamista alueen toimijoiden välille. Alueellinen ja kansainvälinen verkostoituminen ovat myös edellytyksiä hakemuksen läpiviemiselle. Verkoston jäseneksi hakeminen vaatii pitkäjänteistä työtä ja vahvaa sitoutumista. Jatkotutkimuksia tarvitaan esimerkiksi alueen luonnon ja lajiston kartoittamiseksi, geologisen perinnön tarkaksi määrittelemiseksi, geokohteiden perusteelliseksi listaamiseksi sekä kestävän kehityksen ohjeistuksen yhtenäistämiseksi. The objective of this thesis was to chart the operational environment of Korouoma canyon and its neighbouring areas from the perspective of the Geoparks Network. Another objective was to study the functioning of the Geoparks Network and individual geoparks. The work was commissioned by Posio Tourism Association. The theoretical section of the work consists of a description of the operational environment, an explanation of the concept of geotourism, which is closely linked to geoparks, a review of the establishment and operations model of the Geoparks Net- work and defining and describing the geopark concept. The methods used in the study were theme interview and virtual benchmarking. One of the interviews was carried out as a group interview. Virtual benchmarking was used to explore the websites of individual geoparks. The website of Rokua Geopark as the first and only geopark in Finland was processed systematically. The data was analysed using the theory bound method. The results of the study indicate that the operational environment of Korouoma canyon and its neighbouring areas has potential to apply for the membership of the Geoparks Network. The unused resources of the area require a uniform administration. Before the application process can be initiated an administrative organization must be formed, the funding organised and a consensus achieved among the participants. Networking both locally and internationally is also crucial to succeed in applying for the membership of the network. The process calls for persevering work and strong commitment. Further studies are needed for example to chart the nature and species of the area, thoroughly define the geological heritage of the area and the geosites, and to unify the instructions for sustainable development.
