Potilaan henkilökohtainen hygienia sairaalassa : Hygieniaohjeet osana infektioiden torjuntaa

Annually, approximately 48 000 healthcare-associated infections are found in Finland. The most common of these are surgical site infections, urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections and soft tissue infections. These infections are called healthcare-associated infections because they are acquired during hospital treatment or they are related to procedures performed in hospital. Healthcare-associated infections lengthen treatment periods, increase mortality rates and cause extra costs. The majority of these infections could be prevented by better compliance with hygiene protocols. This practice-based thesis was commissioned by the North Karelia Central Hospital Hygiene and Infection Control Unit. The aim of this thesis was to enhance the good personal hygiene of patients and thus reduce the number of healthcare-associated infections. Another aim was to support nurses in providing patient education. The thesis assignment was to produce material on patients’ personal hygiene in the form of a patient information leaflet and a poster. The patient information leaflet includes the most important instructions related to patients’ personal hygiene. The poster covers the same instructions in a nutshell. The materials include instructions related to hand hygiene, coughing hygiene, oral hygiene and intimate hygiene. In addition, they contain instructions for cannulas, catheters and other medical foreign bodies. A further research could focus on the effect of well-implemented personal hygiene measures of patients to the number of healthcare-associated infections. In the future, it could be also researched if patients who have read the instructions have better abilities to comply with personal hygiene in hospital environment. |
