Are they really chalk and cheese? Pre-service science teachers' perspectives on entrepreneurship and economics of science

In recent years, the interest in social aspects of nature of science in science education research have increased, for example; perspectives from the economics of science and entrepreneurship (e.g. Allchin, 2011). The purpose of this paper is to synthesise perspectives from the literature on economics of science, entrepreneurship, nature of science (NOS) and science education to have better understanding of how science works in society. The main objectives of this paper are to (a) scrutinise social aspects of NOS, namely economics of science and entrepreneurship, (b) transform the theoretical knowledge of social aspects of NOS into practical applications for science teaching and learning, and (c) elaborate on the perspectives of pre-service science teachers on how science works in society, and the role of entrepreneurship and economics of science in NOS and science education. Additionally, we propose a framework to illustrate the links between the State, Academia, Market and Industry (SAMI Cycle for short). During one month, verbal and written data of the study has been collected from four participants in Turkey. As a result, the knowledge of participants on social aspects of NOS and how science works in society, and the role of entrepreneurship and economics of science in science education improved.
