Semantic relation of dynamic verbs in Sami Yusuf's album My Ummah

Music for the writer is not only entertainment, but also has a big influence because life is inseparable from music. Often time, people in listening music do not really pay attention to the content of the song lyric, they just get the fun not the knowledge and its essential message although listening the music can express their life stories that gives them inspiration. To show the values, the lyrics can be analyzed by classifying meaning in the semantic analysis. Based on that background, the writer addresses two problems: 1) What lexical meanings of dynamic verbs are found in Sami Yusuf‟s My Ummah album lyrics? 2) What contextual meanings of dynamic verbs are found in Sami Yusuf‟s My Ummah album lyrics? The theories applied are dynamic verbs by Kreidler (1998) and the lexical and the contextual meaning by Lyon (1893). This research is designed in a qualitative approach using content analysis method. The data are 72 words and based on the analysis, this research shows: (1) the lexical meanings of dynamic verbs in the lyrics that show the verbs as action are relevant to the meaning in Merriam Webster and Oxford Dictionary. Meanwhile, the lexical meanings irrelevant to the dictionary are only found some; (2) the contextual meanings of dynamic verbs in the lyrics that show the verbs as action are relevant to the lexical meanings. Meanwhile, the contextual meanings irrelevant to the lexical meaning are only found some. From the findings, it can be concluded that Sami Yusuf‟s My Ummah album lyrics contain the Islamic values. The aims from these lyrics are to invite the listeners and the readers to remember and keep in mind about Allah with His all greatness and also ask to follow the way of His Prophet Muhammad shown by the lexical meaning and the contextual meaning.
