A river that runs through my hometown, Akureyri, has been a thorn in some people’s side. Glerá river has taken lives but it has also given the town possibilities to develop. Firstly by creating a seaport allowing it to be settled and secondly by giving power to harness electricity. The third gift is its beauty, which needs to be more appreciated. By reviewing administrative and public opinions, I have noticed a common interest to turn this riverside into an outdoor recreation area. Its centralized location makes it accessible for inhabitants, allowing for the increased involvement of this open space in their daily lives. My approach is to create feasible places for the residents to enjoy recreation within nature. The structure of paths should serve for effective transportation as well as recreation. The title “Connection to nature” is two-fold and refers to the close relationship which can be gained by experiencing this site between nature and residents. The river stretches from the wilderness through the town to the shore and connects thereby the urban life to the nature of the wilderness.
