Ritgerðin fjallar um þróun menningartengdrar ferðaþjónustu á Vestfjörðum síðustu áratugi. Í rannsókninni er grafist fyrir um ástæður þess að fjöldi safna, setra og sýninga á Vestfjörðum hefur nær fjórfaldast á rúmum tíu árum. Forsendur þessarar þróunar eru raktar til þess tíma þegar fyrst var farið að ræða erindi íslenskrar menningarsögu í ferðaþjónustu snemma á 10. áratug 20. aldar og þess hvernig opinberu fjármagni til menningarmála hefur í auknum mæli verið beint í farveg verkefnastyrkja á síðustu tveimur áratugum. Rannsóknin beinist að því athafnafólki sem hefur staðið fyrir stofnun og rekstri þessarar starfsemi og hvernig það lýsir hugmyndum sínum um starfsemina. Við túlkun vettvangsgagna er horft til þess hvernig hugmyndir þeirra um starfsemina tengjast aðstæðum ferðaþjónustunnar í héraði, hugmyndum um byggðirnar og framtíð þeirra og menningarástandi samtímans eins og það birtist í ríkjandi viðhorfum til menningarstarfsemi og menningarlegs hlutverks hins opinbera. This thesis analyses the development of cultural tourism in the Westfjords of Iceland in the past two decades. Its objective is to uncover the reasons why the number of museums, culture centers and historical exhibitions has nearly quadrupled in the Westfjords in little over a decade. I look for the premises of this development in the years when Icelandic cultural history was first considered as a possible basis for tourism development in the early nineties and how public funds were increasingly channeled through project funding during the same period. The thesis focuses on the entrepreneurs who have founded and run these institutions, associations and companies and how they describe the ideas behind their projects. In my interpretation of the qualitative data I look at how these ideas connect with tourism development in the areas, how they link to concerns about the future development of the area and how they reflect the contemporary cultural condition as it appears in ideas about the management of culture and changing attitudes towards the ...
