Ljóðið er og hefur lengi verið útundan þegar kemur að útgáfuiðnaðinum. Fyrir vikið hefur það oft fundið sér frumlegar og gefandi leiðir sem aðrir miðlar hunsa. Þannig var ljóðið leiðandi í útbreiðslu ör- og sjálfsútgáfu hér á landi, og hefur ljóðaútgáfa aðeins aukist ef eitthvað er. Enn yrkir fólk og jafnvel meira en áður, enda auðveldara að gefa út. En er einhver að lesa þetta? Af hverju rata ljóð sjaldan inn í áætlanir stórra forlaga? Er yfir höfuð hægt að ritstýra þeim? Hvaða merkingu gæti þetta haft fyrir ljóðaformið og hvaða vísbendingar gefur það um framtíð bókarinnar og útgáfuiðnaðarins? Ritgerðin dregur saman sögulegar og fræðilegar heimildir en byggir einnig mikið á persónulegri reynslu og viðtölum við höfunda, ritstjóra og útgefendur. Poetry has for a long time been relatively overlooked by the publishing industry. As a result it has often explored creative and rewarding avenues ignored by other media. Poetry, for one, led the way for the spread of micro- and self-publishing in Iceland, and the publication of poetry has only increased since. People still write poetry, perhaps more than before, as indeed publishing it continues to become even easier. But is anyone reading this stuff? Why does poetry so seldom find a place with larger publishers? Is it even possible to meaningfully edit them? What might that mean for the genre and what hints might we gleam for the future of the book and the publishing industry? The paper combines historical and academic sources while also drawing on personal experience, and interviews with authors, editors and publishers.
