Viðhorf til líkamans í frásögnum af dauða ýmissa Íslendinga og norskra konunga hefur lengi verið umfjöllunarefni fræðimanna. Í þessari ritgerð, sem er framlag til þessarar umræðu, verður rýnt í lýsingar og meðferð á líkömum látinna í Íslendingasögum og konungasögum. Þessi greining mun auðvelda okkur að skilja samband lifandi og dauðra í augum Íslendinga á þrettándu og fjórtándu öld en þeir leituðust einmitt við að skilja þetta sama samband í samfélagi forfeðra sinna. Meðferð hinna látnu var breytileg og réðst að nokkru af tilurð frásagnanna. Taka verður tillit til tilefnis frásagnanna, þeirra takmarkana sem aldur frásagnanna setti sögumanni og eins ólíkra trúarbragða söguhetjanna og sögumanns og þeirra breytinga sem áttu sér stað á mörkum heiðins siðar og kristins. Þótt dauðinn væri sífellt nálægur í fornsögunum var umgengni við líkama hinna látnu breytileg. Til þess að öðlast betri skilning á því rými sem hinir látnu áttu í hugarheimi miðaldamanna er nauðsynlegt að rýna betur í hvernig farið var með hina látnu. The physicality of the stories recounting deaths of various Icelanders and Norwegian kings has been the topic of scholarship for quite some time. This thesis aims to further these discussions and examine in depth the presentation and physical treatment of the bodies of the dead found in the Íslendingasögur and the Konungasögur. This analysis will help us understand the relationship between the living and the dead as seen by Icelanders of the thirteenth to fourteenth century Iceland who were in turn trying to understand the same principles of their ancestors. The dead were treated differently depending on various factors found in the creation of these stories. One must consider the purpose for certain descriptions, the restrictions found by the anachronistic recounting of stories, and the split in religious thought between the writers and the characters, and the physical period of conversion from pre-Christian to Christian religious belief.
