The research also investigated how trust is represented in these different inter-organisational governance approaches. A qualitative case study approach was employed in this research to gain a deep understanding of the research subject. 17 qualitative interviews were conducted with project managers and senior managers in the construction industry in Iceland to gain an understanding of how effective project performance is achieved in the context of different governance approaches and how trust is represented in these approaches. The results indicate that the long-term history of shared work experiences, together with the continuous coordination of network members, are important factors which shape the foundation for the achievement of effectiveness in project performance in the Icelandic construction industry. Long-term work experience brings increased familiarity and trust and the network members establish a positive reputation, all of which contribute to the achievement of effective project performance. Continuous coordination through frequent and productive interaction, by providing clear governance practices and structure and facilitating the constant monitoring of network activities, promotes the achievement of effective project performance. Trust is built and represented in the long-term aspect of the governance practices, and as with continuous and positive prior work experience, that trust increases over time. The results also indicate that although trust is present, there is still a need for the constant monitoring of network activities to ensure effective project performance in the industry. These results are interesting and valuable from the perspective of the construction industry. The importance of the long-term aspect of inter-organisational network governance approaches and ...
