Ritgerð þessi er að mestu leiti skrá yfir blýinnsigli sem fundist hafa á Íslandi. Innsiglin sem hér um ræðir voru fest á innfluttan textíl og voru gjarnan notuð sem nokkurskonar gæðastimpill eða merki um uppruna textílsins. Innsigli sem þessi hafa verið lítið rannsökuð á Íslandi og mætti jafnvel segja að þetta sé nokkuð óþekktur gripaflokkur. Það gæti ef til vill verið sökum þess að slík innsigli eru jafnframt sjaldgæfir fundir í fornleifarannsóknum á Íslandi. Í þessari ritgerð er einnig farið stuttlega yfir notkunarsögu blýinnsigla á textíl sem og helstu rit sem skrifuð hafa verið um slík innsigli. Sýnt er fram á hversu lítil þekking hefur myndast á slíkum innsiglum á Íslandi miðað við þær rannsóknir sem hafa verið framkvæmdar í öðrum löndum. Í þeim tilvikum sem það var hægt voru gerðar tilraunir til þess að rekja uppruna þeirra innsigla sem fundist hafa á Íslandi en einnig hvers konar klæði þessi innsigli kunna að hafa verið fest á. This paper is mostly a catalogue of leaden seals which were attached to cloth imported to Iceland. These kinds of seals were often used as a marker of quality or as a marker of where the cloth originated from. It should be noted that cloth seals have garnered little attention in Iceland, and it could be argued that they are not a well-known finds category which in turn could be explained by the fact that they rarely appear in archaeological contexts in Iceland. A short overview of the history of cloth seal use is also included in this paper along with discussion on the most important works done on cloth seal studies. Furthermore, the cloth seals found in Iceland are discussed in this paper and where possible, attempts were made to identify their origin and what kind of textiles they might have been attached to.
